This is a cargo steamer of the type used in the upper Bay of Fundy, circa 1900. It was quite common, if the wind came up from the land, that one of the larger sailing vessels would go out and pick up the dories to save them a hard row back to shore. This was a normal procedure in all of the fishing communities. The fisherman in the foreground is cutting his anchor line and will jump in the schooner with the dory painter in his left hand. This is based on a true incident where the fisherman was too tired to pull his anchor rope.
