The retired Captain Haws was having difficulty sleeping. He missed the ocean sounds against the hull of his ship which had always put him to sleep. His solution was to hire the village boys to carry and throw buckets of water against the side of his house.
Set in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, circa 1900, this print is as authentic as it can be. The actual house Captain Haws lived in is depicted. The view from this house, across the harbour towards Whitehall, is taken from a period photograph which I managed to procure.
The figures are fictitious. The two boys with buckets suspended between them on a pole, are based on my memories of myself and fellow school mates carrying water to the one room school I attended as a youth.
