Jess Parker, a Halls Harbour mariner, was on the schooner Conrad S when she sank 100 miles off Halifax in 1920. Jess was presumed dead. The ship’s crew was picked up by a passing steamer on it’s way to france. Jess got a working passage on the North Whip, a schooner in the hard pine trade, back to Saint John (New Brunswick) by the way of the West Indies. From Saint John he took the coastal steamer the Ruby L. to Halls Harbour. When Jess got off the boat at Halls Harbour, he put a five gallon ‘jimmy’ of rum on the wharf and told everyone there to help themselves. All the fellows had some, even some who were only thirteen at the time; and the harbour became a very merry place. Many of the men had gone to meet the mail boat and ended up spending the day at the harbour drinking. Some were returned home by wagon, but this fellow was not so fortunate.
In this image a woman from the east side of Halls Harbour can be seen rescuing her husband by taking him by the ear and marching him through the harbour.
