My uncle and two helpers decided to row out to their gill net and bring it in. The waves were high and would have torn the net at low tide.
The men waited at the mouth of the harbour in the protection of the wharf, watching for a series of smaller waves. They were experienced oarsmen. However the first wave they encountered was large enough to completely overturn the dory, end over end. Only my uncle could swim. One man was caught under the overturned dory, the other was knocked unconscious in the surf; his leather jacket was tied around his waist, trapping the air in the jacket which kept him afloat.
