Jess was a veteran sailor who had been around Cape Horn thirteen times. The sailing boat he was on sank about 200 miles waet of Halifax and he was presumed drowned. However, he was picked up by a steamer which took him to France where he got a working passage back to Saint John, New Brunswick via the West Indies. When he got on the wharf, he put down a bag of rum and said, “Everyone help yourselves.” My uncle, who was just a boy at the time said, “The Harbour was a drunken place and after awhile, I got some too!”
