Born in Montreal, Don graduated from the Montreal Graphic Arts Technical Foundation in 1979 and decided to move to Nova Scotia that same year. In 1994 he began studying and perfecting the art of fine woodturning. In the years following, he became a founding member, Vice President (1998) and then in 2010 President of the Nova Woodturners Guild. In 2001 Don won the very prestigious award "Nova Scotia Woodlot Owner of the Year". This important recognition was presented to Don by the forestry sector of Nova Scotia for the sustainable management of his personal woodlot and for his responsible stewardship of the land. In 2013 Don travelled to Europe where he expanded and perfected his woodturning expertise, and became a graduate of the Ecole Escoulen Tournage sur Bois in Aiguines, France. He went on to undertake further professional instruction from internationally renowned artisan Alain Mailland at his studio in Chamborigaud, France. In 2019, the status of Master Artisan was awarded to Don by Craft Nova Scotia. His unique approach continues to take Don's beautiful one of a kind sculptures to the art world and into collections in Germany, Japan, England, New Zealand, the United States and throughout Canada. Don has won many other provincial and national awards throughout his career.
