I made a piece about faith a few years ago. It was primarily about the strength of faith in the absence of fact. The original piece, an interpretation of Christ’s deposition from the cross, included all of the elements of the story, sans the protagonist. The Deposition showed the ladder, the nails and even the hammer of Christ’s crucifixion, but not the figure of Christ himself. In the same vein, St. Sebastian’s execution is extant, save for Sebastian himself. All of the trappings of his eventual canonization, but no saint. The cross but not the crucifix. The tree and arrows, but no Sebastian. Sainthood as an idea, but without the graphic violence that usually accompanies it..
